Do Polakw; to moja siostra zakadaa moje konto, nie ja! (...)
It is my first "full" scenario - and that's why You can't expect very much of it. It still
has many mistakes and I don't know if anyone could be satisfied of playing it...
The hights are eternally reserved for Jess Balsinde and Michael Jeszenka. However,
I'll be trying to get better. I want to thank here, on the start, to Jonas Hasselrot
for limited, but still great patience in helping me...

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The history of crusades dates back to the seventh century.Roman (Byzantine) Empire was tared
apart by religious conflicts and intrigues in Constantinople.Civil war, first Heretic, after
that Jewish rebel in Antioch, weren't the biggest problems. Chosroes II, shah of Persia,
"taking revenge on emperor Phocas, who has killed his friend, empiror Mauritius", attacked
Byzantium. In 12 years, He conquered Anatoly, Egypt and Syria. His armies were reaching
Constantinople. Churches and monasteries were mercilessily plundered (at first; Persian queen
was Christian and usually, They were quite tolerant).Controffensive, leaded by emperor Heraclius,
allowed Empire to regain those lands .It's said to be the first crusade ever. But, although
Byzantium won (Niniveh,627), It (also Persia...) was too exhausted to repeal new enemy attack:
in year 634, Byzantine army, betrayed by Arabian mercenaries, lost a battle (and Syria).During
years 639-45 Byzantium lost Egypt.Till 700 - North Africa. Moslem warriors tried to siege
Constantinople for the first time(s). After battles of Al-Qadisijja and Nahavand, all Persia was
conquered by Moslems. In X century, Byzantium, ruled by Macedonian dynasty, retained some lands
(North Syria) and emperor John Tzimiskes reached the gates of jerusalem. But, after this period,
relations between Empire and Moslem Egypt were quite cordial. And that was the reason why Seljuk
Turks were fighting with Byzantium - They were afraid of possible alliance between those two
powers. Due to parsimonian politicks, Empire was almost defenceless. In year 1071, Byzantine
army, betrayed by Turkish and Norman mercenaries, was completely destroyed in battle of
Manatzkert (Mantzikert, Manazkert, the first capital of Armenia). Although Byzantines were
completly defeated, and emperor Roman Diogenes was captured, sultan Alp Arslan demanded only
evacuation of Armenia and let him out. But, profiting from Byzantine civil war, Turks have got
through border in 1180 and occupied east Anatoly. Due to usurper Nicefor Botaniates rebel, Turks
also conquered north-west Anatoly with great city of Nicea and threatened Constantinople.
Thanks to great emir Chaka, also Aegean coast was subdued; only part of Bitinia, Licia and
Pamphilia were left in Roman hands. On former Christian territory Moslems organized new country
-Sultanat Al-Rum. Choice of capital (Nicea) and name of Sultanat ("Roman") ment that Moslems
wanted to conquer all of the Empire. After repealing Norman raid from west, Emperor Alexius
Comnenos (although He still had the biggest and best- trained army in Christian world; this army
was needed to guard long borders of Empire...) asked Latinists for some mercenaries. But pope
Urban II misunderstooded him. He organized a crusade, and the aim of it was to "liberate"
Jerusalem... First crusade helped Byzantines to liberate some of Anatoly and conquered most of
Syria and Palestine. Countries established there and then by crusaders are all called "Outremer",
"(Europe) Behind-the-Sea". The aim of some next crusades was to lenghten its life. I must add
that there were some crusades against Moslems in Spain, by Sancho III The Great and after the
death of Ramiro I, for example. Of course, crusades were organized not only against Moslems.
And it's my country which feeled it especially. There were crusades against non-Christian,
Polish-like Poabians [They were living from Odra (Oder) river on the East far beyond aba (Elba)
river on the West; "Berlin" is a Polish name for a city, and, what's ironic, it belonged to duchy
of Kopanica (Kopenick or sth. like that, now a part of Berlin), which was very close associated
(it was a fief of it) with Polish duchy of Wielkopolska]. I'm ashamed that there were some Polish
princes, who participated in those events. Now Poabians, if not a part of Polish nation, than
a brother-nation, are extinct. But it's not sure if I can blame Polish prince Mieszko III Stary
/The Old/ for this, as perhaps He just wanted to keep eye on all those German knights. It wasn't
just a crusade - when "crusaders" got to Polish city of Szczecin (Stettin), They didn't want to
stop sieging it even when the citizens (Christians...) placed crosses on city walls... But good
example is Leszek "Biay" ("the White*") who refused to participate in crusades and described
a plan of peaceful converting Prussians by building missions along trade routes. Of course, He
didn't succeed. German crusaders conquered Prussia, Inflants and Estonia. Prussians are also
extinct. There was also crusade against Bolesaw (Boleslas) Rogatka, unfortunate prince of
Legnica (Legnitz). Of course, He was a monster (really...), but You can't blame Him! His
grandmother was a Saint, his mother was Blessed, his fother had a sobriquet "Pius"... Today,
psychologists claim that He was a victim of his grandmother's ascetic stuff...
There were also crusades against Moslem Mongols (battle of Worskla), Byzantines (fall of
Constantinople 1204), Turkey (Nicopolis, Varna...)The idea of the Holy War is ever-living and
will always live in Christian minds, although it is and always had been discordant with Christ'
teaching and (mostly) eastern Christians knew that well. Of course, the "crusade" name was just
a cover of real plans, but it's maybe even more repulsive. The first country, wchich officialy
condemned crusades, was Poland on synod in Constance [Pawe (Paul) Wodkowic]. As it's the same
synod on which John Hus was burned alive, it was a great act of courage. As I've written, there
were Latinists' states established in Levant. The biggest of them were:
-the kingdom of Jerusalem,
-the county of Edessa,
-the duchy of Antioch,
-the county of Tripoli.
Except county of Edessa, which had quite different origins than other Latinist states, those
countries were like cancer on that soil and they weren't supported even by local Christians. Why?
Pope gave exact orders to crusaders: local church structure should NOT be changed. But most of
crusaders had other views: They established new, Latinist, church structure. And this fact, when,
for the first time, by (official) Latinist bishops were standing (illegal) Greek ones, was the
real start of schism. As all Christian churches were tolerated under Moslem rules, all Christians
but Latinists soonly missed Them. Also, because of the things that crusaders have done after
capturing Jerusalem, Jews and Moslems were their irreconcilable enemies. The other thing was that
according to the deal that crusaders settled with emperor Alexius, crusaders Were supposed to
give back to the Empire all terrains that belonged to Byzantium before Turkish invasion. And
crusaders not only have broken it, establishing the duchy of Antioch, but, furthermore, duke of
this Antioch has attacked Byzantine city of Latakya and plundered Byzantine Cyprus...
Edessa has fallen quite early, rest of Outremer survived in almost non-changed shape up to the
battle of Hittin. It had its times of glory (supremity over Egypt for example) but in year 1187,
after a war with Saladin provocated by Renaud de Chtillon, who was attacking Moslem pilgrims,
robbing Moslem caravans, attacking Moslem cities (He wanted even to attack Medina), It has lost
almost everything. The kingdom of Jerusalem was saved only because of courage of Conrad de
Monferatto and Renaud Garnier. However, all saint cities were lost and there was almost no chance
of taking them back from hands of Saladin.

*He has had very bright hair, but it could be carried back to hic character... ha-ha.

[Quite long (and completly unuseful), wasn't it! Too long... So I won't write more.]

CITIES

There are about 150 cities, so I can't say much about them...
And I can't list them all here.
The rule was:
Arabian names for Egyptian cities, French/English for Christian ones.
Sometime I know the name of the city only in Polish and I had to experiment...
Sorry, their order is completely chaotic!

PLAYERS

Byzantines (violet)
This civilization includes two countries; Byzantine Empire itself and its rebelled province,
Cyprus. There are two reasons why I have done it like so; First, map of this scenario contains
only south coast of Anatoly - Byzantine Empire of Lycia and Pamphilia only would be just silly.
The other thing is that it was still province of Empire. Crusaders' attack on it was considered
by Byzantines almost as declaring war against Constantinople (it's just like China and Taywan).
The Byzantines are actually at war with Armenians, and They will be soon atwar with Jerusalemians,
but it's the only civilization that isn't at war with Egyptians. As their territory is in half
island, it would be important for You, if You play Them, to have big navy.

Armenians (red)
Cylician Kingdom, although it wasn't created by crusaders, has the same units as Antiochians
and Jerusalemians, as Armenians were slowly becaming part of Latinist society. They're
currently fighting with Byzantines and Egyptians, but Cylicia is quite safe and quite reach
(as it have a number of big cities and The Trade Wonder) although Armenians may lost for some
time cities behind Taurus Mountains, due to Byzantine attacks and raids by (Egyptian) fanatics,
who are supposed to represent Turkish hordes.

Antiochians (white)
The territory of original state of Antioch was mostly conquered by Saladin (only capital
and its port, St.Simeon, were left in Christian hands) but Antiochian civilization
includes also united with Antioch state of Tripoli. The problem is that those two parts
of country are separated by Egyptian cities of Latakya and Sahiun. Your first goal would
be to liberate them and cities of Al-Iskanderija 2 (Alexandretta), Iss and Baghras.

Jerusalemians (white) - YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO PLAY THEM!
Puny shreds of once-strong Jerusalemian Kingdom. They include Tyre and Beaufort only,
but Tyre is almost unconquerable, and as the third crusade has commen, You will be able
to regain control over some lands. Jerusalem was lost, so there is no capital. Capture
Acco and have one!. But I propose that You don't go further South at first, but concentrate
your forces on north border, where Fenician cities, separated from other Moslem territories
by Liban Mountains, will be easier to conquer. Conquering Cyprus (and rest of Byzantium,
if You like... and if You can.) would be a great goal for You, but it will be very hard;
However, there, far from Egyptian land-forces, You'll be able to produce enough knights to
fight more efficaciously with Moslems.
You needn't worry about defending cities in first part of the game, as You have many
citadels on the ships on the start.

Egyptians (green) YOU SHOULDN'T PLAY THEM!
Syria and Egypt. They have most of the cities and playing them would be to easy.
This country is now, two years after Hittin, at top of its strenght. Its advantage is
also posibility of expanding to the east direction. In reality it wouldn't be so easy,
but there was no chance of creating strictly real situation in this place [and elsewhere
too, I think; lets say that the map could be bigger (and maybe You know how to do it?
It'd have great meaning for me) and I add new civilization; Abbasids' caliphat (there's
another problem, this country existed only theoretically). But if I want to be so
historically correct, I'd have to create another civilizatons (especially Mongols)...]

ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONS

Do not change names of cities, or at least when they will soon be captured, change them back;
If You, for example, change Al-Kuds to Jerusalem, events connected with this city won't work!!

It is very, very important to have strong fleet; ships are very strong, and, moreover,
if You won't build navy, your coastal cities will be vulnerable to branders' attacks.
The idea of branders was taken from Allard's H.S. Hfelt's (very nice) "republic"
(I won't write all title- it is too long) scenario, where they were named as "flaming ships".
"Branders" is the real name for them.

The main source of money if You play some of players, will be robbing caravans.
Don't forget about it!
From the start of making scenarios, I was thinking about possibility of getting money from
caravan robbing. But it was the nameless creator of "colonize" scenario who has made it before
I did, so it is his idea, unless someone has done it before him.

The idea of getting veteran status only by combats origins from Jonas
Hasselrot's Great Northern War scenario.

My next scenario will be about Middle East in age of Byzantine Paleologs,
later I'm thinking about the fourth crusade or Heraclius/Arabs.

I'll NOT write here descriptions (attack,defence...)
of all units. It wouldn't be very clever-
You may look at Rules file.

CREDITS

At first, I would like to thank to Jess Balsinde, Michael Jeszenka and,
especially, Jonas Hasselrot for helping me.

All exept one (puddle; and yes, that's all I can afford. Still, my puddle is just wonderfull)
units of this scenario are made by someone else.
And so, I want to say "thank You" for units, but not only them, to:

               Jess Balsinde (JBR)
               Juan Moreno (JMP)
Alex The Magnificent (AM / ALEX)
               David Morovan (DM)
               Allard H.S. Hfelt (AHS)
               (MB)
               (heart)
whoever they are. Some of units lack any initials as I don't know (I don't
remember!) who have made them (or I'm not quite sure, as I got them for
example from scenarios, where they didn't have anyone written as the creator).
I hope, however, that no-one will be offended by not using his full or any
name. This same goes for icons of improvements [although much of icons for
wonders were made by me; You can use them, as well as icons of Early Byzantine
(Roman) Cavalery and Early Yanchars of my production, which I'll include.]
I must also thank the autor of "colonize" scenario for images of double-
irrigation and pollution. Wonderful mountains were made (I'm not quite sure)
by Harlan Thompson. For sure I have used image of plains, made by him.
I used also some flags; Egyptian- Harlan Thompson, Byzantine- David Morovan
(I have changed it a little), Turkish- Jess Balsinde. Some were made by me.
I'm very proud of Jerusalemian and little Byzantine ones.
If You are the creator of anything I used, and I haven't mentioned You, just
write me about it and I will do something with that.

It would be very nice if someone would mail me.
But know, that my letters can be very, very long...

Post Scriptum
I include also a base map on which this scenario was built.
